Netflix Original Series, "Bloodline"

While it seems logical that Netflix will debut a few clunkers once it kicks its original programming into high gear, the most recent release, Bloodline, is proof that we’re barely scratching the surface of how amazing the service’s series can be. Some will disagree, but I found Bloodline to be the best drama that Netflix has delivered thus far, easily topping the soapy dark politics of House of Cards and the fractured dramedy of Orange is the New Black.

Even though it’s mildly difficult to cull together all of my gushing praise into concise sentences, here are five reasons why Bloodline is the greatest of Netflix’s current dramas. (And “Because it’s nothing like Hemlock Grove isn’t one of them, but it certainly could have been.) I’ll be keeping things spoiler-free as well, so don’t worry about major plot points dropping.

”bloodline”

1. The storyline is familiar but deeply thought out. Created by the Damages trio of Glenn Kessler, Todd A. Kessler and Daniel Zelman, Bloodline is basically about a large well-to-do family whose lives change drastically once the oldest sibling, played by the always incredible Ben Mendelsohn, returns home after years of being the disregarded black sheep to everyone but the matriarch. But how did he become that way? How does the rest of the family feel about having him back, and how does it affect their own stories? And what’s with those dead bodies? Bloodline will answer those questions and many more, but only when it wants to, making sure you never quite know what you’re watching.

2. The cast is pitch-perfect. I already mentioned Mendelsohn, who is excellent as the hard-lucked Danny Rayburn, but he’s the tip of a massive iceberg of talent. The elder Rayburns, the moody Robert and graceful Sally, are played by Sam Shepard and Sissy Spacek, respectively. Kyle Chandler plays the emotionally repressed Detective John Rayburn, Norbert Leo Butz plays the emotional tempest Kevin Rayburn, and Linda Cardellini plays the romantically distraught lawyer Meg Rayburn. Extended family includes Jacinda Barrett as John’s wife Diana, Katie Finneran as Kevin’s wife Belle, and Enrique Murciano as Meg’s longtime boyfriend Marco. Then we have Jamie McShane and ChloĆ« Sevigny as Danny’s sibling friends Eric and Chelsea O’Bannon. And everyone else who gets screentime? They’re great as well. The Emmys definitely need to be paying attention here.

3. The dysfunctional family dynamic is depressingly relatable. Okay, so maybe not everyone can relate to having wealthy parents who run a gorgeous beachside inn, but we are all familiar with financial jumbles, marital snags, sibling rivalries, and the urge to find oneself in a positive light in a parent’s eyes. The Rayburns aren’t a family that argues for an argument’s sake; they’re a family with a tragic history that not all parties have accepted with the same amount of sincerity, and dishonesty is used like currency. If the ties that bind are the strongest, it’s the ones that have been frayed beyond repair that become the most interesting.

4. The pacing and tone remain dramatic and mysterious throughout. A huge part of why Bloodline is so watchable is due to the way plot points and character motivations are teased out in ways that aren’t immediately obvious. Characters will get caught up in a memory during a scene, and it will be episodes later when you realize the significance of earlier scenes. And though there are moments where laughter is welcome, this is a series that doesn’t stray far from its dark and slithering narrative. And it would much rather keep you thinking rather than knock you backwards with gaudy shocks and twists.

”bloodline”

5. It looks positively outstanding. Even if Bloodline utilized a group of nameless directors – and this is a talented squad, fear not – it would be impossible for anyone to make this Florida Keys location look anything less than amazing. Even when the plot is playing up the dangers and other downsides of living on the coast, everything always looks crisp and gorgeous, although perhaps its muted color scheme doesn’t make it pop as much as House of Cards does. Add to that the way that the “waking dream sequences” (for lack of a better phrase) are handled, and you’ve got a series where the aesthetic is just as structured and dependable as the characters, performances and screenwriting.

Big Brother: After Dark

Not Big Brother, Big Brother After Dark!

This show is amazing if you like Big Brother! I have watched it every single night and love it! Basically, its the cameras from Big Brother, LIVE! Instead of just Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, its every day! It can get boring but it shows some stuff that you would never see on the main show! Ashley admitted she doesn't like Ian and said he needs to leave, yet today she said she likes him! Also, they are given alcohol in BB, but they don't drink just one beer on the day they get it, no, they save it and party! Its funny to see all the host guests getting drunk and talking about completely stupid things. Also, you get to hear all the house-guests being called to the diary room and seeing stuff they don't have time to show, very cool!

Big Brother after dark is a crisp, interesting show that you should try to watch some time! Its on Showtime 2, every night at 12am-4am

Dance Moms

Dance moms... Where to start? This show is one of the best reality TV shows ever created. First time I saw it was with a bunch of friends and we were watching it because there was nothing else on. WE ALL LOVED IT! about a week later, we all waited eagerly for a new episode and would discuss it the next day at work! Each week the show follows Abby Lee Miller's Dance Studios competition team. This consists of Maddie, Nia, Paige, Brooke, Mackenzie, and Chloe. The show does show them dancing and the final competition, but it mainly follows the moms. These are some of the most interesting people on TV. The dance moms all have their on opinions and are not afraid to share them. There always seems to be a fight about something. Now, you may think that might get annoying to watch but somehow, you get attached to each fight and want it to go on! All the girls seem nice and it is so nice to see their mothers looking out for them and supporting them so much!

Now, once in a while, we get a new dancer named Payton. Payton does not belong anywhere close to this group. If you have seen an episode with Payton in it, you would see that she is distractingly ugly. I'm not trying to be mean to her family or her (hopefully she won't see this) but honestly! She is hard to look at and I fast fowarded through her solo!

All in all, this is a must see show and hopefully it continues for years to come and we can see the girls get older and maybe one day stand up and tell Abby off!

Tosh.O

Tosh.O

Go ahead, say he is unfunny, or that he tries to hard. Trust me, he doesn't care! Daniel Tosh is one of the best hosts of an internet show on TV. He may not be the best comedian, but he does his other job well. All those stupid shows like The Soup, and that bullshit one on G4 are nothing compared to this! He brought this idea of reviewing and showing internet clips on TV. Some of the ones he shows you might have seen before, but it's still funny to here what he has to say! Some weeks are extremely funny, but others are not as great. If your a true fan, you stick it out and continue watching.

Tosh has a new show coming out that he is really trying to sell on Tosh.O called "Brickleberry" which looks pretty good.  It looks like he is putting a lot of effort into it and I will definitely be DVRing it when it premiers!

Check out Tosh's site here

Tosh.O is on Tuesdays at 10 EST on Comedy Central

People do not give this show enough credit. It is extremely funny. If you watch it with the fucking attitude of "you need to be stupid to like this" then your not going to enjoy it. Yesterdays episode had me laughing the whole entire time. Being on after Tosh.O really helps to because you can watch tosh, then this right after. (then Dance Moms if you like that show) The show is about three guys who have a job at a call center and just smoke weed and drink constantly. They always seem to find trouble and keep the show interesting! Make sure this is being recorded each week Tuesdays at 10:30pm EST!

Boy Meets World

Boy Meets World

Now, I know this show isn't new, but it is something I just started watching and I really like it! Basically, these 4 kids always seem to cause problems mostly revolving around girls, school, and growing up. The first episode I watched, I didn't like it, but I gave it a chance and now I love it! I would record 5 episodes of this a day! (I know crazy!) Honeslty, give this show a chance and you might love it too! This show is on ABC Family every weekday morning 7-930am (Check local listings)

Howard Stern Show

Howard Stern Show!
Now, I know this isn't a TV show, but I just wanted to add it to this blog. I am an active listener of The Howard Stern Show and have been for about 2 years. I havn't missed a show ever! He is on 6am-10am on Sirius Radio (Paid subscription required). He is extremely funny and every single day has a new adventure with the same group of people. Robin Quivers is there and does the news at the end. They also have two people assigned to doing prank calls! What a job! Here is a video of Sal and Richard making a prank call (Graphic Language)

I am telling you, you will love Howard if you start to listen. He is on Monday-Wednesday and sometimes Thursdays.
